Against the background of continuing globalization processes, the MA program "Modern Global History" seeks to make students familiar with the academic analysis of the history of different world regions and their entanglement since 1850. Central global developments, processes of change and experiences will be considered by way of problem-oriented questions. The program focuses on the space which developed through the processes of globalization and multiform modernization – and which is still developing as a world community beyond the nation state or via advanced organizational patterns as seen in Europe. In doing so, globalization will be perceived not as a homogenizing teleological process, but rather with a consideration of anti-movements, conscious dissociations and alternative concepts, all of which have circumvented and challenged globalization. A cultural-historical access, which focuses on the exchange and conflict of cultures at a micro- and macro-historical level is thereby constitutive.

The course of study focuses on three core themes: values and life worlds, conflict and violence, and knowledge and communication. These thematic pillars form a perspective from which to examine the spatial and cultural characteristics of global phenomena, with all of their entanglements and distinctions. At the same time, the MA program is conceptualized in such a way that economic, political and social aspects will also be considered. The program has particular strengths in the modern history of South, East and Southeast Asia, North and Latin America, Africa as well as Western and Eastern Europe/Russia.

The Modern Global History Program is a 2-year MA program designed for an international student body. It combines the expertise of historians from two outstanding academic institutions: Jacobs University Bremen, founded in 1999 as the first private research university in Germany and attended by students from over 90 nations, and the University of Bremen, one of the country’s leading public research universities. The language of instruction is English. This is a tuition-free program.
